Welcome to Year
5.-7.

The last years of primary school, 5th-7th grade, help to prepare the students for the
transition between childhood and
adolescence.
Being able to build on the children’s creativity and curiosity is an important part in year 5.-7. Therefore, students get to experiment in science, solve practical problems in mathematics and create new products in arts and crafts. Students are encouraged to work more independently.

In years 5-7 the pupils go on trips all over London. They visit museums, historical buildings, theatres, places of worship and the great outdoors. This helps to motivate and engage the pupils in their learning as well as exposing them to the rich history that London has to offer.

INFORMATION ABOUT YEARS 5.-7.
How many hours do they have a week?

Years 5 – 7 have a total of 23.5 hours a week.  Monday – Thursday the school day is 8.45am-3.30pm. On Fridays we finish at 2.30pm.

How is the teaching organised?

The pupils in Year 5-7 share a classroom and a class teacher.
They are given a digital weekly workplan that outlines the week’s tasks, focus and aims taken from the curriculum.
Twice a year they have a parent- teacher conference where the students’ academic and social development is discussed.

How do we work across subjects and cohorts?

We will often work with common themes.
We want to develop students’ creativity, wonder and curiosity through culture, literature, commitment and practical work.
Some of the topics are explored within separate classes while others are across age groups and can include the whole school.

How do we learn English?

Students in Year 5-7 receive three hours of English a week and are taught by both a native English-speaking teacher and a Norwegian teacher.

Our teaching is largely topic-based and very often cross-curricular, in line with ‘fagfornyelsen’.

We aim to use ‘London as our classroom’ as much as possible and take advantage of the many theatres, museums and exhibitions that London has to offer. We place an emphasis on literature of all genres and focus on reading, using The Oxford Reading Tree and aim for students to be free-reading by year 6. Our library is stocked with current age-appropriate fiction as well as classic favourites.

We also teach the Cambridge University ESOL examinations for which our school is a recognised Preparation Centre. ( https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/) These are skills-based examinations and KET, PET and FCE are taught in year 5.-7. Students may sit for the tests but they are by no means compulsory.

The students have expanded the number of hours in English. There is an English-speaking and a Norwegian-speaking teacher in all English classes. In addition to the subjects in the subject, students have either KET, PET, FCE hours each week.

What kind of trips and activities will the students participate in?

The pupils will utilise the rich cultural and historical aspects of London. They will visit museums, historical buildings, art galleries, theatres and different places of worship as part of their curriculum. The school also employs professional instructors for activities such as  climbing, swimming, street dance, fencing, tennis, cricket, rugby and football. In addition to this the pupils have various whole-school activity days each year including a skating day, visits to The Norwegian Church a nature trail on Wimbledon Common and a Sports Day in a designated local athletics stadium.

Every autumn, students in year 5.-7. go to PGL, an activity camp in Surrey, south of London. It can be compared to a Norwegian “leirskole” . It is an important part of the process of bonding the new and old students into one group early in the school year. Students enjoy being challenged physically and learning through team activities.

What extracurricular activities are there for pupils in year 5-7. ?

Apart from all that London has to offer (See the tab SCHOOL – LEISURE ACTIVITIES for more information) we have activities after school. There is a school band, a choir, a chess club and Piano lessons.
